How often have you had to top off the oil, especailly when new?

Mostly looking to when you first bought the car presuming it was new, did you ever add oil before the first oil change and did you do so because the car told you too or did you measure it with the dip-stick or add a bit as a precaution? I only have a couple thousand miles but have heard that when the engine is new sometimes it will burn off some oil and the system does not detect it. Also I know it is a 5W-30 weight, but is the original factory oil synthetic or a synthetic blend? I did not find that anywhere in the manual, and want to add the right type if I need to. The estimated oil change interval of 7,500 suggests a synthetic blend, but I am not sure.
